Medical Billing Job Responsibilities – Healthcare Claims, Insurance Processing, and Payment Management
- Submit, track, and follow up on medical insurance claims to ensure timely and accurate billing and reimbursement according to payer requirements.
- Verify patient insurance coverage, eligibility, and benefits, ensuring proper documentation and minimizing claim denials.
- Resolve claim rejections, denials, and underpayments by communicating with insurance companies, patients, and internal teams.
- Process patient invoices, payments, adjustments, and refunds, ensuring proper account reconciliation and record-keeping.
- Review and update billing records, coding information, and patient accounts using electronic health records (EHR) and billing software systems.
- Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to validate service documentation, charge entry, and accurate coding (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS).
- Respond to patient inquiries regarding billing statements, insurance coverage, and financial responsibility with professionalism and empathy.
- Ensure compliance with billing regulations (HIPAA, Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer policies) and internal protocols.
- Assist with monthly reporting, audits, and the development of process improvements for billing efficiency.
- Participate in departmental meetings, ongoing training, and professional development to stay current with healthcare billing standards.
Medical Billing Qualifications – Insurance Knowledge, Administrative Skills, and Healthcare Communication
- High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary coursework or certification in medical billing and coding preferred.
- 1+ year of experience in medical billing, healthcare administration, or a similar office role strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with medical billing software, electronic health records (EHR), and standard office applications (Word, Excel, email).
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, coding systems (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS), and insurance processes (commercial, Medicare, Medicaid).
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive patient information.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for effective interactions with patients, providers, and payers.
- Problem-solving mindset and ability to resolve billing issues accurately and efficiently.
- Collaborative approach with a willingness to support team members and adapt to evolving healthcare operations.
- Bilingual or multilingual skills are a plus but not required.
